Three beaches in the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have been awarded the top benchmark for beaches – the coveted Blue Flag.

Cranfield, Tyrella and Murlough were afforded the status at the 2019 Blue Flag and Seaside Awards, presented at The Marine Court Hotel, Bangor.

The awards, which were presented by Ian Humphreys Chief Executive, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, are bestowed to coastal destinations which have met strict criteria and meet the highest quality in water, safety and environmental management.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Casey welcomed the trio of successes.

He said: “Blue Flag status is such an important selling point for our district as we strive to become a premier tourism destination.

“I am delighted that Cranfield, Tyrella and Murlough beaches have been recognised in these prestigious awards.

“Cleanliness, safety and assured water quality are key factors in deciding which beach to visit and the Blue Flag acts as a guarantee to our tourists that these beaches are some of the best in Ireland.”
